Sure Jay Ewing's a shrewd
marketing guy to trademark the phrase "Ultimate Golf Learning Experience ®." Fancy way to
sell expensive lessons, right? Before
you dismiss the claim off hand, hear out Jay's dream for changing the way you
learn golf, by making it a unique golf experience, maybe even an ultimate golf
experience.
You've had golf lessons. Probably
with a handful of others, maybe even a series of those group meetings.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the process, as far as it goes. Maybe you've even
had a series of individual lessons, one-on-one instruction. But did you ever
actually play golf with the long-time touring or teaching pro that instructed
you? Did you do it on a spectacular course, with luxurious accommodations that
already put you in a mood to learn? The answer is likely no.

Believe it or not, you can play a decent golf
course for less than $100 on a Phoenix,
Arizona golf vacation, and you
don't have to bake in the midday August sun to do it.
Vistal Golf Club is the 2001 reincarnation of Thunderbirds
Golf Club, a 1950s-era course that had become known a mediocre public course on
a fantastic piece of property. With the donated design services of the PGA
Tour, along with consultation by tour players Tom Lehman and Billy Mayfair, it
is now one of the best courses you can play on a Phoenix, Arizona
golf vacation for less than $100. In fact, the highest green fee all year is
only $79.
Unlike some other area courses, whose desert
terrain is beautiful but often monotonous, the imposing presence of South Mountain
and the numerous ponds and creeks lend intrigue to the game at Vistal. Plus,
holes one and 10 look out over the Phoenix
skyline and Chase Field, home of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks.

We all remember so fondly and so vividly our first car. It might not have been brand new, might not have had all the fancy options of the newest models we'd later aspire to, but it was also more fun and was host to more good times than any car we ever owned. You remember it, don't you? Like it was yesterday. Desert Canyon Golf Club , the first golf course built in Fountain Hills back in 1971, has that same feel. Friendly, very functional, a whole lot of fun, and just 25 minutes from downtown Scottsdale. And now Desert Canyon has added 150 yards in distance to push the new championship tees back to nearly 6600 yards this fall, multiplying the diversity of shot options on this par-71 design that has mountain-style characteristics, yet with the great natural vegetation indigenous to this area of the desert. Not only is Desert Canyon "golfer-friendly"ť between its many elevated tees and greens, it's also very user-friendly to area residents and visitors (especially first-timers) as the most affordable course in the area.

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club got our attention when its fantastic first course, Cholla, opened in 2001. Now, with its new 18-hole, Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw-designed Saguaro course scheduled to open tomorrow, it’s a must visit on an Arizona golf vacation.
In fact, you can now easily justify choosing a hotel to be closer to this one-two punch in Fort McDowell than in Scottsdale proper, about a half hour away. If you do, consider the CopperWynd Resort and Club in Fountain Hills.

This week, the upper-echelon players from golf’s global tours are competing in the Accenture Match Play Championship on the South Course at the Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona (the rest of the PGA Tour, concurrently, is in Mexico for the first time ever).
Although the club is private, you can play this John Fought-designed golf course on your Arizona golf vacation…if you schedule your tee time for an odd-numbered day. That’s because it, and the original, North Course, alternate between public and private play.
